Twilight FaeThe Twilight FaeThe story of the Twilight Fae is an old one dating back to the First Age, perhaps even older. The oral record of them in Fae come from a tale by Rel, Counselor of Earth and Fire to Queen Mab. Rel’s Story of the Twilight Rel’s forest had been moved to Fae and it became his Place. He had infrequent visitors to his home and longed for companionship. To him it seems as if his fellow counselors saw more of the Fae folk, every moment of their cycles were packed with people and they experienced no emptiness in their lives. While Nimbus visited Rel, the druid told her of his loneliness. Masks did appear at this time while Nimbus told Rel if he merely traveled to the gray Edge of his Place then he would only be alone if he so chose it. Rel embarked on his journey with only Masks for company. He was both excited and terrified at the concept of there being a boundary, for he was of the opinion that Nature goes on forever. The two traveled to all the places Rel had named within his forest. Occasionally Masks would leave for a time and then come back days later as if he has never left at all. Rel traveled for many moons. The sky went from blue to gold, from violet to black, from white to blue again. The twilight was his favorite time, for it was cool enough to grant respite from the heat of the day and yet warm enough to stave off the chill of night. On one day during the twilight, Rel dreamed. The rest of the story is told from his point of view. “I dreamt of a land where the twilight ever reigned, and ever was kept. And there the people, from all tribes, all places, everywhere, lifted up their arms and their faces to the light of the moon and the light of the sun, and to the fire they danced and sang, and to the earth they tilled and loved and returned. They had laws, ways, champions for their people who sought to keep the peace when they could, and swiftly defeat their foes when war threatened that peace. “In this, I saw weavers upon their loom, making a gorgeous pattern of a wheel, and in dreaming this I knew I had found The Wheel, that every being is attached to, that every creature, no matter how insignificant they seem to others, are the most important on the Wheel. The weavers took my hands and guided me to a place where I saw so many different people that looked like me, but couldn't think of how they could have been me, and then I realized, they haven't been me yet. I was and am the First. And I needed to make it count. “Thus I spoke to the Weavers Three, and made an oath that I would not waste the life I had now, nor any other I have been blessed by the Wheel to be given. But for some strange reason, the Weavers mocked me in a tongue I could not tell... and there my dream ended abruptly. “I was at the Edge of my Place, and the fog and smoke was all around. The trees here were dead, burnt, singed and made into nothing more but charred ruins, embers, coal. The lake that became a river, that became a stream, was all dried up. It was twilight, but one could not tell from the glow of the red sky. But my heart remembered my dream, and thus I would not falter, and I called out to the fog that since I had nothing to fear, neither did it. “Upon hearing the words, then they came, one by one, until they numbered more than my hands and feet could count, times ten men! They came to me, speaking in strange ways, and yet when I spoke back, we could understand each other. I had mastered their voice with no work whatsoever. I thanked the magics that saw fit to fill me with this gift, and it extends to every cycle of myself: I can Speak to anything or anyone that can speak. “Under the twilight time, they spoke to me of Men who Hunted, and of Their Master, and how their Herald had been killed. Rage began to fill me at the injustice, but they were hungry, hurting, lost. I bid them welcome into my home. I promised they would be safe, and always have shelter.” u>The Twilight Fae and the Courtsu> Despite attempts by other counselors and even by some Dukes, the Twilight Fae remained outside of the Court of Fae. Rel spoke for them as their Champion. He argued that not all were meant to be soldiers, ladies-in-waiting, or jesters or fodder. They worshiped the Sun God and the Mood Goddess in their own way. After Rosetta betrayed Rel and sealed him away in Tree, Rosetta burned the forest. The Twilight Fae managed to flee back to the Edge of the Place to parts unknown, escaping the fire and eluding any pursuers. They remained apart for the Courts of Oberon and Titania and did not reappeared until a few years after CuCulain and Nimbus claimed the crowns of Fae. People of the Twilight They called themselves “Idir oíche agus lá, táimid ag na daoine” or roughly translated “We the people between night and day”. When the Twilight Fae first came to Rel’s Place in Faerie, they were ignorant of things like palaces and clothing. They knew of some moral things like concepts of right and wrong. The Twilight Fae loved to sing and their voices could fill the air with their beautiful sound. They were hunters and people of the land. The Twilight Fae never took anything from the land without giving something back. If they took leaves to make a lean-to, they might leave wooden beads buried at the base of the tree. If an animal were to be killed for food, they would practice light scarification, granting the land blood back for the blood taken. The blood would be washed off and then the water poured out onto the land where the animal was killed. Nothing would be wasted from a kill, and anything not immediately usable might be make into gifts to be returned to the land. The Plight of the Last Ones The Twilight Fae did not become known to the majority of the mortals until many years after the end of the Rites of War. The Twilight Fae were encountered as wild fae beholden to no Court; mysterious in nature and disappearing soon after they were seen. The plight of these fae was not fully understood until much damage had already been done. Poachers had killed off many of the Twilight Fae, but the most destruction was done by a terrible creature known as the Gruagach. The Gruagach was a very large, horrible beast with long tentacles and claws. Its claws of cold iron could lay low many fae creatures and its bite was a terrible, crushing blow. Though speculated that the creature was summoned to help destroy fae, the real purpose remains unknown for it was locked away in the First Age in a prison of ice. It stalked the dark places of night and even dreams. Many Twilight Fae, particularly the males, were killed by its rampaging. The Gruagach was slain in the fall of 1010 by Orado Morhen of Ivory accompanied by Johan del Var of Mythguard. When the Twilight Fae were encountered in the late summer of 1010, there were but three frightened females left. One of the females later gave birth to a daughter, the suspected last child to be born of the Twilight Fae. Rumors have circulated about a ritual to become one of the Twilight Fae, but no progress had been made. Thought many people work towards a solution, if nothing is done those four females will be the last of their kind. |
