GOLDENROD

Heather sat on a hillside with flowers in her hair

She was bound to a pine with any ivy vine that the fairies had tied there

Heather lifted her bright eyes to the rising light of day

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

Jamie he was a squire to a mighty knight and bold

He was good with a sword and true to his lord and he did as he was told

Jamie greeted the dawning as he rode along his way

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

Jamie rode out of the wood to a field of butterflies

Saw Heather there with her golden hair and he met her emerald eyes

Tried to mention her beauty but his lips could nothing say

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

“Alas!” she cried “I’m captive here, a fate I’ve always feared

I foolish trod upon goldenrod and the fairy she appeared

‘Ye snuffed my favorite flower’ she said, ‘The price ye now will pay’”

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

Jamie said, “Fear not, fair maid, I’ll face the fairy horde

Have faith in me I’ll set you free by my wit or by my sword

Enchanted beings, show yourselves, and tarry not I pray”

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

Then from behind a yellow flower a waif addressed the squire

A tender thing with golden wings and a voice of frozen fire

“Foolish lad, ye dare to face the fury of the fay?”

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

From flowers, stones and grasses their patron spirits rose

With faces grim encircled him for the challenge that he chose

Jamie braced his heart now as fate before him lay

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

Then Goldenrod, she spoke while the wind held deathly still

“Lad, for me ruse now ye must choose a flower from this hill

And if ye choose it wrongly, then both o ye must stay”

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

“It must be rooted firmly to this hill on which ye stand

A spirit must inhabit it, ye must take this spirit’s hand

And if it does na like ye, I’ll keep ye ‘til ye’re grey!”

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

Jamie looked at Primrose, Wild Thyme and Foxglove too

Sweet Pansy bright and Lily’s white and Bluebell’s darker hue

The said to little Goldenrod, “Your game is now in play”

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

“I choose a golden flower, the brightest here to me

Bound to this hill against her will, calling out to be set free

A noble spirit dwells within; I’ll take her if I may”

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

Heather held her hand out, and Jamie his as well

When they took hold the sunlight’s golden rays around them fell

The vines that held her tightly withered and fell away

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

Alone they stood on the hillside with flowers everywhere

In the shade of the pine with their hands entwined and spring-song in the air

They rode away together in the rising light of day

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay

Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay
