Place/Gathering : Unknown Date: 1006 Original by/Sung to: Written and Sung by Kathy Fey Heather sat on a hillside with flowers in her hair She was bound to a pine with any ivy vine that the fairies had tied there Heather lifted her bright eyes to the rising light of day Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay Jamie he was a squire to a mighty knight and bold He was good with a sword and true to his lord and he did as he was told Jamie greeted the dawning as he rode along his way Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay Jamie rode out of the wood to a field of butterflies Saw Heather there with her golden hair and he met her emerald eyes Tried to mention her beauty but his lips could nothing say Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay “Alas!” she cried “I’m captive here, a fate I’ve always feared I foolish trod upon goldenrod and the fairy she appeared ‘Ye snuffed my favorite flower’ she said, ‘The price ye now will pay’” Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay Jamie said, “Fear not, fair maid, I’ll face the fairy horde Have faith in me I’ll set you free by my wit or by my sword Enchanted beings, show yourselves, and tarry not I pray” Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay Then from behind a yellow flower a waif addressed the squire A tender thing with golden wings and a voice of frozen fire “Foolish lad, ye dare to face the fury of the fay?” Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay From flowers, stones and grasses their patron spirits rose With faces grim encircled him for the challenge that he chose Jamie braced his heart now as fate before him lay Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay Then Goldenrod, she spoke while the wind held deathly still “Lad, for me ruse now ye must choose a flower from this hill And if ye choose it wrongly, then both o ye must stay” Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay “It must be rooted firmly to this hill on which ye stand A spirit must inhabit it, ye must take this spirit’s hand And if it does na like ye, I’ll keep ye ‘til ye’re grey!” Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay Jamie looked at Primrose, Wild Thyme and Foxglove too Sweet Pansy bright and Lily’s white and Bluebell’s darker hue The said to little Goldenrod, “Your game is now in play” Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay “I choose a golden flower, the brightest here to me Bound to this hill against her will, calling out to be set free A noble spirit dwells within; I’ll take her if I may” Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay Heather held her hand out, and Jamie his as well When they took hold the sunlight’s golden rays around them fell The vines that held her tightly withered and fell away Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay Alone they stood on the hillside with flowers everywhere In the shade of the pine with their hands entwined and spring-song in the air They rode away together in the rising light of day Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay Singing aia holly-o holly-ay laha aia holly-ay |
